Heavy Hiatus

3 min read

cw: heavy, death Hey everyone. Some of you have noticed that I've been extremely absent lately. I appreciate those who have reached out, even if I haven't gotten back to you please know I see your messages and am thankful. Those of you who follow me on Youtube know why, but I know many folks only use one social media at a time so I felt I should say something here too. The day after my last hopeful status update, I received some devastating news - that my father had passed away suddenly from cardiac arrest. This one text turned my world upside down. It was extremely shocking - he had a pacemaker, but was extremely lively, went hiking and on frequent walks, didn't seem at all bothered by chest pain or any indicators. He was in his early 70s and often talked about wanting to live to 90. My close friends both on and offline know that I was always a daddy's girl - due to difficulties in my family, my dad was everything to me growing up. He was always super patient, kind and gentle, even though I was definitely a bit of an argumentative kid. He always encouraged my passions - in science and by helping buy art supplies or fantasy novels. He was always there for me. Even when I went to college and then grad school across the country, we talked multiple times a week over phone and text. There were many things we were looking forward to doing together in the next year, since we hadn't seen each other since the pandemic began back in early 2020. There are countless things we had shared as father and daughter- experiences, inside jokes, ideas, my childhood moments where I was at my best and worst - that I don't truly share with anyone now. I could go on and on about all the things I miss about my dad, but the point is that I unfortunately have had little energy or motivation these days. What little I have, is now devoted to continuing with school, helping my mom, going through my dad's old files, and spending time with my boyfriend. (And searching for a good grief therapist). I honestly haven't picked up a pen to draw in over a month, keeping up with social media is even more difficult. Thankfully, I do feel this shadow won't last forever. I have supportive people around me, I know my dad would want me to have as fulfilling and happy of a life possible. In the past week I have even had a few ideas for various artworks. Some dragon-themed, some not. But I will likely be withdrawing from almost all social media for the next few months, or at least posting and replying to comments very rarely. I don't expect the hiatus to be permanent or have a definite end - probably it'll be a gradual return.

How to Join

8 min read

Hi there! Are you interested in joining PPAU? We're excited to have you - read on! :D

You must understand some of the PPAU lore and APPLY to the group to be accepted and invited in. Do not try to click "Join Group" without an invite, it'll automatically be rejected!

It might sound difficult but applying to PPAU is more about understanding the group lore, rules, and creating a character to live and thrive in the world more than anything. We'll explain how to join below! :)

General Information

First, please read over the two most important journals in order to understand the rules of PP-AU as well as the setting! These would be: RULES and The Pyrrhia-Pantala Alliance University Setting.

(In particular, note that this is primarily an adventure roleplay & art group and may have some intense RPs; this is also a semi-literate RP with a focus on cohesive character and worldbuilding, so do expect to do a bit of reading and writing to join!)

Second, you MUST join the PPAU Newbie Server Discord, a link to which is located on the group's main DevArt page! (Therefore you must be 13+) This Discord group will introduce you to some of the PPAU community. You will be able to ask questions and talk to current PPAU members who can help you out with any confusion! There will also be announcements about group openings and such in this Discord server as well.

Third: Start thinking of your first character!

  • Characters fall into one of five categories:

  • Student - Young dragons (typically age 6-12) who attend the Pyrrhia-Pantala University. They engage in student activities and typically more lighthearted adventure. You can only have 1 student at a time. Check to see which tribe slots are open for students before making one on the University Roster! Students must learn for at least 2 years real time and complete 2 Graduation Quests in order to successfully Graduate from the University.

  • --------

  • Alliance - Skilled dragons of the Pyrrhia-Pantala Alliance ("Alliancers") age 8+ (typically age 10-50) who help keep peace between the continents of Pyrrhia and Pantala, and ensure communication and trade between the two continents stays safe. These dragons typically go on more dangerous and intense missions to help others, hunt down baddies, and do their best to save the world. Check to see which tribe slots are open for Alliancers before making one on the Alliance Roster! You can have up to two Alliancers and 1 Trainee at a time.

  • --------

  • Trainees - Dragons age 7+ (typically age 9-20) who are in training to join the Alliance! While they do not have the same Talon groupings as students, Trainees live together in the Crystal Castle and work with their Alliancer Mentors on more dangerous missions and adventures. Trainees must train for at least 16 months real time, have a Mentor for at least 6 months, complete at least 1 RP with their mentor, and complete 2 Graduation Quests before they can graduate to be full Alliance!

  • --------

  • Civilian - Dragons living on Isle Mezzo, going about their everyday lives. They encompass a wide range of ages and jobs, from dragonets to carpenters to mercenaries. View a list of current Civilians living on Isle Mezzo here!

  • --------

  • Professor - Teachers at the University. They are usually experts in their fields and help care for and teach the students (and sometimes the Trainees) at the Pyrrhia-Pantala University. Check to see what positions are open for Professors before making one! (You can have your professor be an assistant teacher for a class, but you must obtain permission from the owner of the current Professor first). Positions held by NPCs are considered Open. Normally, Professors are also Alliance members, but if you make a non-Alliance professor, you cannot have a student character.

You must read the lore of the Kingdoms that pertain to your character's tribe(s), which can be found here: Pyrrhia Today or Pantala Today. You are also encouraged to read The Isle Mezzo lore in order to understand the geography of the main island on which the roleplay takes place! Important to note! If you would like your first character to come into the group with a BAN (ie: a special or unusual quality, such as being a hybrid or having a special tribe ability such as Mindreading, Flamesilk, or being Royalty as examples); you must review the rules for Joining the Group with Dragonscales. Note that not all bans are open and most have limited slots (because they represent traits that are unusual and rare!) You are encouraged to ask for help in the newbie Discord group if you are confused after reading the Dragonscale Shop journal.

Fourth: Once you have a good idea for a character, find the PPAU Application below and begin creating your character! This can be a bit confusing, so we have created a CHARACTER CREATION WALKTHROUGH that will walk you through how to fill out the application! Click here for it!

Application for Pyrrhia-Pantala

You will have to download the application sheet and draw a fullbody reference. You will also have to fill out the text portion (!) of the application underneath the application sheet. Both visual and written portions are very important!

If you are having trouble commissioning a character or coloring a base, or if you cannot draw, you can check out the PPAU Adoptables folder to see if there are any free adoptables for people applying to PPAU! Be sure to read and follow the rules of the PPAU Adoptables (listed in the gallery folder) if you decide to use one of these adopts!

Fifth: When you've finished your character application, post in the #Character-Pre-Review channel to get your application pre-reviewed by previous members of PPAU! This is like a preliminary review before the official review from the admins and it helps streamline your app, making the official review process as quick as possible as there's usually a large volume of apps to sort through. If you are uncomfortable with having a pre-review done in a public channel you may request to DM a Mentor to have the pre-review done in private over DMs.

Sixth: When you've finished your character application and you've had it pre-reviewed by at least one person, upload it to Deviantart as an art submission! (You can also upload it to Stash, but you will have to upload it to DeviantArt once it is accepted). You should upload the writing portion to the "Description" section of the Deviation.

Then check the group's front page to see when the group is next grading applications! There will be an announcement in the newbie server Discord whenever there is a group opening. Once the group is open for new characters, you may submit your application to PPAU by posting in the #Character-Submission channel within PPAU'S Newbie Server.

Character Application Name: (your character's name) Tribe: (your character's tribe(s)) Occupation: (Student, Alliance, Trainee, Professor, or if they are a Civilian, list their job) Link to Application: (link here) Deviantart Name: Who did your pre-review?: Extra: Any extra notes! If your characters have any bans, note which ones and link to screenshotted proof that you won the ban bid or bought the ban.

Seventh: Staff will review your application and let you know of any corrections you might need to make in a Discord Thread. Typically, these will be any edits needed to ensure your character adheres to the worldbuilding, rules and lore of the world of PPAU, or clarifications needed within the application. - Your character will also be assigned starting Reputation in the various kingdoms based on their History and other aspects of their profile. - Note: At the moment, we are not an "exclusive" group - generally anyone who applies (who has followed the group Rules) can be accepted! However, we only accept applications (and players) who are willing to follow the group Rules and worldbuilding already established in PPAU. If you are not willing to follow the requested admin edits, your application may be denied. We'll do our best to work with you to allow your character to be what you imagined while still following group lore though! Note that we also reserve the right to reject entry to any person that has a known history of potentially unsafe behavior, homophobia, easily-accessed NSFW on their social media accounts, etc. Eighth: Once your application is accepted, we will give you a private Discord link (do not share this with anyone else) to the main PPAU Discord Server, as well as inviting you to the group on DeviantArt. Once you join the Discord Server, please ask for the "PPAU United" role in # staff-questions, as well as letting us know who your character is and if you need any other roles.

Finally:

Welcome to PPAU! You may have up to two characters for free to start with (additional characters cost dragonscales, find the details in the Dragonscale shop!)

Quests

12 min read

Quests are writing, artwork or roleplay prompts to encourage participation in imagining your character within the world of PPAU! Through Quests, your characters can change the world of PPAU, as well as changing how the world views them. Your characters will also level themselves up, gain experience and skills, and develop!

Quests represent canon in-game adventures that your characters have over time. Once a character has completed a Quest and completion has been confirmed, you can consider their experiences during the quest to be canon. Quests will be replacing Biweekly prompts for the purpose of encouraging folks to engage with PPAU!

POTENTIAL QUEST REWARDS:

- Dragon Tears (dt), needed for leveling characters up!

- Reputation; doing a good deed for a kingdom will raise a character's reputation. However, be careful! Some quests, or choices made during quests, may call for unscrupulous activities and can lower a character's reputation.

- Skills; Characters can earn new skills, or improve their rank at existing skills! Some quests could even expand skill slots!

- Items; these could range from trinkets, to a useful scroll, to potential even animus-touched items.

- Inspirations; single use bonuses that can be typically used during RP, that provide a benefit. However, some inspirations have use outside of RP too. (These are typically only given for excelling at a quest!)

- Other intangible benefits or detriments! Because Quests represent your character's actions within the world of PPAU, their actions (or lack of action) during Quests could set certain events within the world into motion, cause NPCs to remember your character during future events, and more! These could be positive or negative.

- Note that any media submitted for quest completion cannot be submitted for dragonscales! You must submit for one or the other.

QUEST RULES:

1) Players may only complete one quest per character each month! That is, once you have submitted a Completed Quest, you must wait until the 1st of the next month before submitting another Quest for the same character. To clarify, you may submit 1 Quest for each character you own, once every month.

2) Quests must show a good-faith effort to produce original, creative writing or finished, polished artwork that meets the Quest requirements. All artwork must be colored.

3) Once a character has completed any Quest, they cannot complete it again. However, you can have multiple characters attempt the same Quest if they're eligible for it!

4) Quest submissions must follow the Group Rules.

5) You may only complete Current Quests; while we have a list of Past Quests for record-keeping, you cannot retro-actively complete one UNLESS you are using a Quest Extension. 6) You cannot submit drawing/writing for both Quests and Dragonscales, it must be one or the other!

HOW TO GO ON A QUEST?

1) Preview the list of Current Quests and pick one that your character is eligible for and that you'd like to do. (Denoted by the "Available To" section of the Quest. 2) Complete either the Artwork or Writing requirement for the Quest! (A few Quests may also have a Roleplay option, but not all of them do.) You are encourage to submit your completed Quest to DeviantArt and submit it to the "Quests" folder in the PPAU group, but you don't have to! If you do submit it to DA, put [QUEST] in the title or at the beginning of the description so mods know it is a Quest and shouldn't be given ds. 3) Submit your completed quest before the deadline by filling out the following form and commenting on this journal: Character: (character name here) Quest: (put quest title here) Link to Submission: (link to your quest submission here; either an artwork, writing, or link to an RP transcript with your writing highlighted) Extra: If there's a choice between two rewards, pick which one you want!

4) A PPAU moderator will comment confirming a successful Quest Completion, and give you your rewards! *Some Quests can also have a small scenario or choice that a moderator will present to you upon your Quest submission! These will not affect Quest Completion status or rewards, but may affect the in-game storyline and the "intangible rewards". 5) Once you have been confirmed, screenshot your rewards and add them to your character's sheet under the "Dragon Tears & Levelling Records" section! This is important as you may need these as proof when character advancement and levelling. 6) Now that your character's Quest is counted as complete, you may treat the Quest as complete in-game as well, and you can have your character refer things they did on the completed Quest in RP.

COMMON QUEST QUESTIONS:

Q: What happens if I can't make the Quest Deadline or miss it? (What are Quest Extensions?) A: If you know you cannot finish your piece by the Quest Deadline, you may use a Quest Extension! You start with 4 Quest Extensions each year and you can see how many you have at any given time by checking the Dragonscale Counter sheet. - Quest Extensions allow you to take an additional 1 month to finish a Quest. For example, if the Quest Deadline was on March 30th, I could submit my Quest on April 30th. If you are using a Quest Extension, please state so in your Quest Submission comment! - Note that Quests given on Extension still count for the "1 quest per month" policy; so in the above example, if you submitted your Extended Quest on April 30th, you wouldn't be able to submit any other quests for that character during the month of April.

Q: Are we allowed to collaborate on Quests? (for non-Roleplay quests) A: You may! However, all collaborators must have an equal workload and must each submit their own unique/individual piece in order to have all characters gain the Quest Rewards.

Q: Can my character RP and do other things while on a Quest? A: Yes, your character can still RP and do other things! However, you may not refer to your character's participation in a Quest until the Quest is complete.

Q: There are Requirements for completing Quests, but what if I go above and beyond what the requirement states? A: If you significantly exceed the Quest Requirements (ex: write at least 4000 words for your quest/write 2x the word requirement (whichever is greater), do the art and writing requirements for a quest, or significantly exceed art expectations (drawing multiple fullbodies when the requirements only call for 1, or doing a 30+ second length PMV, doing a 20+ frame complex animation etc), your character will gain an Inspiration!

Q: Why are some Quests labeled Part I, Part II, etc? What is a Multi-Part Quest? A: This is to indicate Quests that are ongoing and will have sequels. Typically, only characters who have participated in Part I of a Quest will have access to Part II. A Multi-Part Quest will be a series of Quests where the storyline of the Quest will change depending on the actions of the Questers.

Q: Can I stack Quest Extensions to get more time to finish? A: You may, but you cannot stack more than 2 Quest Extensions total to finish a single Quest. So you cannot extend the Quest Deadline by more than 2 months.

Q: What time zone are Quests Deadlines? A: United States EST, however we will be flexible with 1 day wiggle room so all time zones are covered.

Q: What happens if I run out of time on a Quest and have no more Extensions left? A: You may turn in whatever artwork or writing you have done, even if it's incomplete! You will get partial or minimal rewards for your attempt. However, in-game your character will have considered to have not completed their portion of the quest. - It still counts as a Quest Attempt, so you would not be able to do another quest for that character during that month, and you could not have that character repeat the same quest again.

Q: How exactly do Quests affect the in-game world? A: This completely varies from quest-to-quest. Some quests for example, may ask your character to make a choice, and that choice (or the sum total of every character's choices) could affect things going on in the PPAU world. Other quests may affect the world depending on if they've been completed or not; for example, if there's a quest to put out a fire and nobody completes it successfully, the fire might spread in the world and cause problems for characters in RP. There are many potential outcomes!

Q: Can I have multiple of my own characters go on the same quest? A: Yes you can, if they are eligible for the Quest! However, you must create separate submissions for each character (for example, you can't put both characters into one piece of artwork and have it count twice).

Q: Can baby dragonets (characters age 3 or under) go on Quests? A: Characters age 3 or below cannot go on any Quests unless that Quest specifically notes that baby dragonets can join it. Characters age 3 and below are also limited to 4 quests per year total (in addition to the 1 quest per month limitation).

Q: What if my Quest submission is denied? A: This should never happen if you follow the rules, fulfill the Quest requirements, and make a good faith effort to create a polished Quest submission! However, if your Quest is denied, you can either choose to submit it anyway for partial/minimal rewards, or you can take the time to fix any issues and re-submit before the Quest Deadline.

Q: Can I use the same drawing/writing/RP for two different quests? A: No, if you submit a drawing/writing/RP log for one quest, it can't ever be used for another quest (for the same character) and also can't ever be used to claim dragonscales.

-----------------------------

What are Inspirations?

Inspirations (similar to the Inspiration mechanic from D&D) are one time-use bonuses that can rarely be gained as Quest Rewards, or are gained from doing significant extra effort for a quest. Examples of extra effort in a Quest are as follows: - Drawing multiple fullbodies and a detailed scene background when the Quest only calls for 1 halfbody or 1 fullbody - Doubling the number of PC dragons shown in detail versus what's required in a quest (eg: if a quest requires 2 halfbodies, then drawing 4 halfbodies; all characters should be prominently presented and not as small added cameos in the background) - Significant perspective work in a quest requiring a halfbody or more, including a detailed scene background (eg: notable 2 or 3 point perspective) - Full painting/rendering with polish on a fullbody and scene background including a fore, mid and background on a quest that doesn't already require painting or a scene bg (polish = no scribbled or rough lines, scalework on the dragon characters, rendered textures, detail on objects in background) - Doing both the art and writing/RP requirements for a Quest (at least a colored halfbody with background and 2000+ words required, with larger requirements if the specific quest requires it) - Frame by Frame animation for quests requiring at least a halfbody, containing at least 5 unique colored half or fullbody character frames (not including moving holds or small movements such as a blink or smile) - at least one frame must fulfill the original quest requirement - A PMV with at least 5 scenes over 20+ seconds timed to music/voice acting (at least one scene must fulfill base quest requirements) - Writing 4000+ words or double the quest word count requirement (whichever is larger). Typically these bonuses are used in RP but some can be used outside of RP. - Each character can only hold one Inspiration at a time, and once they use it, it's gone until they get a new one. If they gain a new Inspiration, they can choose to keep one or the other (not both).

When your character get an Inspiration, screenshot it and keep the link in the "Dragon Tears and Levelling Records" section of the application to keep track of it!

To use an Inspiration: State in RP (or in a comment during an applicable situation) that you wish to use your Inspiration, then paste the screenshot of your Inspiration. Then, be sure to delete it from your character's application.

Examples of Inspirations: Stat Gambler Tell the Truth Already Shrek Crocs Brand New Me Banana Slamma Nope! Try Again (What exactly do they do? You'll have to find out!)

Note that two characters may trade Inspirations if they would like! To do so, the players owning each character must do a collaboration (draw an unshaded, colored headshots; write a collaboration of 800 words per person; or do an RP consisting of 1100 words per person across at least 5 replies of your characters; in each case the two characters must be interacting). You may then apply to trade Inspirations by commenting with the finished pieces and request on this journal!

Hello all! Just went to the virtual Wings of Fire event hosted by Brooklyn Book Festival, and it occurred to me that folks might be interested in the Wings of Fire info that I've learned from the virtual events that Tui has done this summer. So here's an info dump! It's not an organized Q & A like I usually post, but more of just a mishmashed list of interesting bullet points. Sometimes the sentences might be all wack since I'm trying to take notes as fast as possible during the event haha. This is a collection of information from various virtual events over the course of the summer: enjoy!

From Brooklyn Book Festival:

- Tui said, “You will all get to see the cover of Book 14 really soon”

- An aspect of the series that Tui felt was underrated or overlooked sometimes was how much she was thinking about parenting and how kids can turn out OK despite what their parents and childhood were like. That theme is very important in not only Arc 1, but all the books. Basically she enjoys when people notice all the thought she put into the underlying themes of the books, she really appreciates it when readers notice them.

- Snowfall, Crystal, and Minke are the names of Queen Glacier’s daughters. They were the possible choices for the throne, but Glacier actually picked the next heir on her deathbed so there would be no war of Succession. Snowfall thinks that she will choose Crystal bc she’s older and “doesn’t yell at people” but she picks Snowfall and Snowfall wonders for the rest of the book why Glacier picked her. She has anxiety over why Snowfall picked her and if she can live up to it. (This is revealed early in Dangerous Gift)

- Tui wants to get back into the Legend of the Hive and expand on it in the Guide to World of Wings of Fire that’s being planned, as well as more about the BeetleWings.

- It was not possible to use the Dreamvisitors to visit Darkstalker while he was in his enchanted sleep, because it was a deep and dreamless sleep. Tui notes this is probably a good thing, because Clearsight would have tried to visit him if it had been possible. Tui also notes that you can only dreamvisit dragons you have seen before, so the dragon in question would have had to have seen Darkstalker to visit him.

- The Scorching will definitely be addressed in the Guide to Wings of Fire, Tui knows what happened in the Scorching but she doesn’t have the characters that she’s excited about or knows about. She needs to have characters that she’s interested in in order to write a story, so if she figures some out that she latches onto while writing the guide, it’s possible that it could turn into a book. But for now the Scorching is slated for the Guide.

- Tui would also like to write more about each tribe’s history in the Guide. For example the Guide would cover particularly famous queens of the MudWings and what happened in the MudWing history (why Chameleon states in Book 8 that the MudWings know how bad it is not to have an heir)

- We will see Riptide in Book 14 and the Talons of Peace

- Tui has confirmed that the LeafWings are also related to RainWings, and some RainWings were one of the tribes that fled to Pantala a long time ago from Pyrrhia. She confirmed that LeafWings and RainWings both share the sun absorption ability. For the LeafWings, the sun gives them energy and allows them to eat infrequently.

- Tui doesn’t care about the people (parents) complaining about Sundew and Willow online, because she is writing for all the wonderful kids who come up to her and the talented readers and writers who she inspires and who she talks to at events. She really cares about the kids who tell her how happy they are that there is LGBTQ representation in Wings of Fire, and that’s what she is writing for, not the angry people on Amazon.

- Tui’s kids help her stay off Twitter, but she does read comments and posts from her favorite authors sometimes

- Flamesilks are not immune to fire, they are only immune to (their own) flamesilk. They can still be hurt by normal fire.

- Tui is totally supportive of fanfictions and fanart, and she doesn’t mind non-canon colors or non-canon interpretations. She loves it when people take Wings of Fire content and goes on in their own direction.

- If two animus dragons cast two spells directly in conflict with each other, the one who is older, more powerful, more practiced and experienced, and focused is likely to win. Also Tui mentioned something about what is being enchanted to use the spell would have an effect as well. She is wary about describing hard rules to animus magic in case she wants to break them later, but she does have a good idea of what leads to animus power and how it works.

- Tui will probably write the Guide to Wings of Fire before Book 15. She is not sure what she will write after Book 15.

- Tui is interested in continuing Undauntable’s story someday (and building on the cliffhanger of Dragonslayer). She stated “He’s not awesome but there’s hope for him”. She is interested in making another Legends story for the humans in Dragonslayer.

- In regards to the Wings of Fire TV show, Tui is happy with the show production so far and she thinks it’s really cool how deeply they are thinking about the books. For example, one of the things the environment designers are thinking is “What did the NightWing island look before the volcano? What’s left of what they built?” Currently the people working on the show are trying to figure out an art style for the show and what platforms it will be streamed on. However, Tui noted that making the TV show is a very long process.

- Tui has no idea if fans will be allowed to audition for the Wings of Fire TV show voice actors. She said if it is open to the public she will let her fans know, but she doesn’t know how it works or if the general public would be allowed to audition.

From other events in summer 2020: Does Tui ever make herself laugh when she’s writing?

- Yes, usually when she goes back and reads something that she wrote a few weeks earlier and forgot about. She loves writing Deathbringer and Glory, and Qibli and Winter scenes, also Peril’s comments makes her laugh

What is Tui’s stance on hope – has she ever had to go back and rewrite or brighten up some of the arcs because they’re not hopeful enough?

- Tui thinks hope is super important and looks for it when she reads. She doesn’t tend to write adult books as much because a lot of adult books have the theme of being “stuck” in some way, whereas in young person books there can be still a way to find your destiny.

- In WoF, there can be a lot of darkness in the world but characters don’t lose hope.

How does Tui keep everything consistent?

- She keeps a word document for each character with details for each character, and then she also keeps a huge word document about the entire world about all the different characters and connections.

- She does check the Wikia from time to time

What is Tui’s writing set up?

- She has a small office at home. She has the map of Pyrrhia above her desk, fanart that people have given her, and printouts of the Wings of Fire book covers. She also has little sculptures that fans have given her. She has coffee and tea while she writes.

She has a little ritual where she looks at 3 authors on twitter or does the NYT crossword puzzle to wake her brain up.

Does Tui have a strategy for getting in the mood for writing? Or to help her mental health since writing takes so much brain power?

- Tui tries to write at least 1 sentence a day, because writing 1 sentence often makes the next sentences flow.

- Reading also helps getting into a more sort of writer brain. She also has a shelf of writing books and likes to reread them. It’s also helpful for her to read about other writers. One of her favorite writing books is Take Joy by Jane Yolen. It’s helpful to remember to enjoy the process of writing, not just think about the end and publishing/pushing out the end product. Another thing she really likes is a collection of letters that John Steinbeck wrote to his editor.

For Wings of fire, Tui has had the same editor the whole time, which is quite rare; her editor's name is Amanda Maciel (Bio note: I've met Amanda and she's really fantastic!)

Being an editor helped Tui be able to look at her books and be more accepting of criticism.

She has a document of random stray sentences and bits from each book.

Dragon tribe that Tui would let baby sit her kids?

- Queen Thorn? Or Queen Coral, but she’s a bad mom, the kids would be safe though. Clay would be the best though

Name the character you would not want to sit next to on the bus:

- Fierceteeth, Queen Scarlet, Icicle

Character/tribe that would like sushi the most:

Seawings

Does Tui have plans to end the series?

- No, she’s still excited about it and has excitement about it! She isn’t sure yet about an entire 5 book arc next though, she might do some single books.

Her favorite couples are Glory and Deathbringer & Sundew/Willow.

She wants any dragon to be whatever they are and nobody judges them for it. She specifically wanted to make a fantasy world where LGBT is accepted. Also Tui has been working in publishing for so long so she’s been able to see the progress in publishing and the acceptance of what she’s allowed to do in terms of LGBT couples.

She actually had a queer couple in her first novel and it was just in the background, and her editor was upset about it. But now she can actually have a lesbian couple as the centerpiece in her books and her current editor supports it.

Will there be any new tribes? Tui noted that she deliberately did not use any spider names for HiveWings because she was originally thinking about a spider-based tribe. It may or may not be added someday

PPAU has officially turned 2 years old!

That's right, it's been two years since Pyrrhia-Pantala Alliance University opened on May 12, 2018! @AlaskaDrawing and I (Biohazardia) came up with the idea of an Alliance that united Pyrrhia and Pantala, a Wings of Fire roleplay group for epic adventures, danger and intrigue, plot twist-filled stories, meaningful character development, filled with friendships and laughter. Thank you to everyone who has been a part of our little family and made it as fantastic as it is!

For every member in the group, both those still with us and those who have moved on, thank you for being a part of PPAU! You have helped shape this world into what it is today. And once again, we are celebrating our group's birthday with an epic collaboration! What kind of collaboration you say? Allow me to proudly present:

SPECIAL EVENT: A PPAU Multi-Animation Project (MAP)!

FIND THE SCRIPT, RULES, AND EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW HERE! [PARTS ARE NOW CLOSED. HOWEVER, YOU CAN COMMENT TO BE A "BACKUP" IF SOME FOLKS CAN'T COMPLETE THEIR PART!]

To sign up for the PPAU MAP: 1) You must be a current member of PPAU!! 2) Please carefully read the Rules and Script document! 3) At the end of the rules is a form you can fill out, please comment on this journal with the form filled out to apply! Don't forget the codewords to ensure you read all the rules ; ) We will start assigning parts in around 24-48 hours after the journal is posted. ** We'll be assigning parts based on the creativity of your idea for the part, how much the part fits the characters chosen, with bonus points for including more characters and collaborations! 4) Ask any questions you have in # staff-questions! Also please use the new # ppau-2-years-map channel in the server to communicate and discuss potential collaborations and ideas for parts, post WIPs, etc. Ideally we would like to involve as many PPAU folks as possible in this project : D

5) We understand that many of you cannot do animations or are unfamiliar with them! While we encourage you to push your comfort zones and explore tweening/animation if you can, it's totally okay if not!

6) All participants in this MAP will gain 100 dragonscales for their efforts!

7) The due date for a WIP of some sort is June 31, and the due date for turning in your part (or all the drawings for your part) is July 31 2020!

Guidelines:

- If AMV, be sure the animations are slower, this is a hopeful and peaceful MAP, there shouldn’t be any extreme animations such as fight scenes. You can do a mix of AMV/PMV of course. If you are animating you can simplify character designs, but be sure the character's owner is OK with the simplified design (and they still feel it correctly depicts their character).

- If PMV, be sure to include tweens or camera movement! (Example of camera movement: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJrfbAw0nAM) I can also add camera movement in for you.

- If still images, please be sure to stay in contact with Biohazardia so I can tween your part for you or do camera movement somehow! You should only choose this option if you have no way to tween or animate and can’t find someone to collab with (it’s totally okay if that’s the case though!). You’ll need to be able to make transparent .pngs or .psd files. (Example of a still image with camera movement is above)

** You are absolutely encouraged to collaborate with others who can motion tween or animate, for example one person can sketch and line the frames, one person can color them, and the last person can do the background and put the animation together. Or for a tweening program, one person can draw the sketch + lines, one person can color, and the last person can do the background and tweening. (If you have Bio tween your part, this is similar to what we'll be doing)

Happy animating and celebrating PPAU's second year! Let's make this collaboration as amazing as last year's anniversary event!

EVEN MORE LORE: Citybuilding for the world of PPAU!

We know y'all are thirsty for lore, and honestly worldbuilding is one of the most fun parts about creating and maintaining the world of PPAU! So if you're a writer and can't participate in the Anniversary MAP, or if you just wanna do lore AND animation, this is for you!

In the Wings of Fire canon, the worlds of Pyrrhia and Pantala have few established cities. However, in PPAU we aim to have a rich world with different places to visit, so for a limited time we're extending the invitation to help in building the world we play in! For this Citybuilding venture, we're hoping to flesh out the cities/locations of Pyrrhia specifically in a manner similar to how Sequoia City (the Leaf Capitol) of Pantala is described. However, you are also free to develop villages, towns, or other areas of interest! See this journal for examples of how Sequoia City is described.

At the end, we hope to create a lore page for Pyrrhia describing the cities and locations similar to the one for Pantala! We're aiming to about 3-4 locations per Kingdom for Pyrrhia. Feel free to discuss citybuilding ideas in the new temporary # citybuilding channel!

Rules and How to Make Your PPAU City: 1) When you submit a city idea to the group, you must acknowledge that the entire city/location idea becomes the property of PPAU, for the admins to use in perpetuity for the purpose of PPAU, even if you leave the group. (You can use your city idea for your own personal stories afterward, but you also must grant unrestricted permission for PPAU to use it for its own (non-profit) purposes). - Once you have submitted the city idea, you not guaranteed have any more input on the development of the city (as it could be destroyed or become quite different through plot, or may be tweaked to better fit the group lore). After submission, the city may be developed as the plot/character actions decree, or as admins/moderators see fit. - You will always be credited for the original city idea!

2) Please keep themes in your cities appropriate to the restrictions in the PPAU rules (that is do not mention things that are not allowed in the PPAU rules, keep "mature" aspects of the city to PG13. Fantasy violence can of course occur in the city, but don't go into extreme gory detail, do not include any sexual elements or aspects.)

3) Places that you can make cities/locations: Each Pyrrhian Kingdom, not including the capitols: - NightWing part of the Rainforest Kingdom - Old Night Kingdom (excluding Millennium City; see Stormchaser's bio for info on the Old Night Kingdom) - Volcanic Night Island - RainWing part of the Rainforest Kingdom - Sky Kingdom - Sand Kingdom - Ice Kingdom (we'd love to see a city based around one of the outer palaces) - Sea Kingdom - Mud Kingdom

Certain Pantalan Locations (reference the Pantala Lore page for any previous info on them): Silk Kingdom: - Mantis Hive - Jewel Hive - Cricket Hive - Bloodworm Hive - ??? Peninsula (opposite side of Lake Scorpion from Queen's Landing) Leaf Kingdom: - Stardew Vale - Stardew Hills - Poison Jungle Hive Kingdom:

- Tsetse Hive - Yellowjacket Hive - Vinegaroon Hive - Hornet Hive - Free to make 1 other area of interest! Please do not submit cities that already have lore in PPAU or Wings of Fire! Examples: Any of the Kingdom Capitols (eg: Deep Palace, Sky Capitol, Queen's Landing etc), Wilding Weald, Day City in the Rainforest Kingdom, Possibility, Sanctuary, Jade Mountain Hamlet, Dragonsbreath Caves (the caves under Pantala), Mezzo Town, Mezzo Village

4) You will gain 50 ds for submitting a city idea and an additional 75 ds if your city idea is accepted as PPAU canon, as well as the pleasure of being able to visit your city in-game! Please don't complain if your idea is not accepted, or guilt the folks who do get ideas accepted. You can submit as many city ideas as you'd like but only a max of 2 will be chosen to make canon in PPAU! We will accept city ideas on a rolling basis starting June 13.

5) City/location ideas are more likely to be accepted based on: a) How fleshed out are they (how much thought and information is in the city? More is better!) b) Does the idea fit with the already established Wings of Fire and PPAU lore? (ex; if your city features significant non-medieval technology, a multitribal population deep in the Ice Kingdom or crime in the Sky Kingdom, it will almost certainly be rejected) - see the Pyrrhia Today and Pantala Today journals for Kingdom lore info! c) Grammar and organization of your doc (if there's a lot of spelling errors or it's hard to read, it's less likely to be accepted - no fancy formatting is needed though! You can even include the info as a list of bullet points). d) Creativity, how does the city distinguish itself? How does it fit to the main tribe that populates it? (Ex: Sequoia City is literally built out of huge trees) e) Any visuals like a city map or building pictures are a bonus but not needed!

5) To develop a city idea, please make a Google Document or sta.sh with the following information. It's up to you how you lay it out as long as the info is easy to find and in this order. - City or Location Name - Location on the map (put an X on a map of Pyrrhia or Pantala to denote where the location is) - Kingdom (what Kingdom rules over your city) - Population Size: Small, Medium, Large, or Massive - City appearance (describe the city, what do the buildings look like? How does the geography around the city affect it?) - Climate (this will probably be based on the Kingdom's climate, but what about cities on the borders of Kingdoms? Does your city have seasons?) - City Culture (what are dragons in the city mostly like? is it very friendly and welcoming to outsiders, or do dragons here keep to themselves? What tribes of dragons usually live here? What is the crime rate? What sorts of imports and exports does the city feature, does it have a purpose to the Kingdom? Are there specific neighborhoods/districts in the city that have different "personalities"? Any festivals or particular celebrations for your city? And more!) - Recent History (Describe the recent history (the past 20-30 years) of your city or location. If it was peaceful that's totally fine, talk about which factions in the city have been gaining power, how the peace is kept, etc. This section doesn't have to be very long necessarily. If there were any big conflicts or change of Queens for the city though, be sure to describe how that affected the city) - Major NPCs (Describe at least 3 Major NPCs that players could encounter in your city. Include their name, tribes, gender, age, appearance, and brief personality description. Describe what they do in the city, why they are major players or are often seen. Be sure to describe if they have anything unusual about them, such as if they are particularly strong, lead a gang or faction, etc.) - Extra (any extra information! Examples include a founding story or extra lore for your city, exports and imports, city anthem, etc!)

6) To submit your city idea, comment on this journal with the following info: - City or Location Name - City's Kingdom - Link to your city's google doc/stash/information page - Acknowledgement that you read the Citybuilding rules and understand them! And that is everything! Have fun creating cities; for now we'll accept city submissions until July 31 2020!
